Sheikh Yasir Fikry Fahmy was born and raised in Northern New Jersey. His interest in studying Islam and involvement in Muslim American da'wa developed at an early age and bloomed through his involvement in both local and national Muslim youth organization efforts. His involvement with these Muslim youth activities allowed him to travel throughout the United States and exposed him to Muslim Americans of all ages and backgrounds. Throughout his high school years, Sheikh Yasir informally studied with various Muslim scholars in the United States. He began his formal training in the traditional Islamic sciences when he attended the Islamic University of Jordan at the age of seventeen. After completing a year of intensive study, he returned home to the United States to complete a Bachelors of Science from Rutgers University. Sheikh Yasir then worked for three years in corporate America, while at the same time pursuing his Islamic studies with prominent local Muslim scholars.
Sh. Yasir then returned to the Middle East to attend the prestigious Al-Azhar University. During his seven years of studying in the Middle East, he completed a degree from Al-Azhar University, while simultaneously studying under and attending the classes of numerous scholars in and around Al-Azhar. He has learned under the most preeminent scholars of Egypt, most notably Sheikh Ahmad Taha ‘Ali Rayyan, and others. Sheikh Yasir also received numerous ‘ijazaat(independent certifications) in the subjects of Fiqh, Hadith, Aqeeda, Usul Al-fiqh, Seerah, Tazkiyyah, Mantiq and in Arabic Nahu (grammar), Sarf (morphology) and Balagha (rhetoric). In 2013, he became the first American Azhari to teach in the Al-Azhar Mosque.
He became the official imam of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, the largest mosque in New England in September 2015. Through his teaching, lecturing, mentorship, and religious leadership, Fahmy aims to foster love for the deen and appreciation of the vast richness of Islamic tradition in new generations of American Muslims.
Sheikh Fahmy currently resides in New Jersey, and is married with one son.
