Hanan Hashem is a Research Assistant and Community Educator at The Family and Youth Institute. She completed her Master’s in Counseling Psychology at Wayne State University in 2016 and is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology and a Masters in Quantitative Methods at The University of Texas, Austin. Hanan’s main interests are in research, community, and clinical work.

Her current research focuses on increasing protective factors that influence American Muslim youth development, including the role of their racial, religious, and gender identities, as well as experiences of belonging. She is currently working on her dissertation examining the ways ethnic and religious identity, ethnic and religious discrimination, and one’s sense of belonging predict psychological distress among young American Muslims. Hanan also serves as the Principal Investigator at Safa Institute, where she is mentoring undergraduate students in collecting data on substance use, help-seeking behaviors, and mental health outcomes.

Hanan has also completed her clinical training at various sites, including community mental health centers, a youth shelter, and university counseling centers. She plans to start her year-long internship program in the summer of 2021. Hanan started her own consulting business where she promotes mental health education and provides consultation sessions for individuals interested in therapy.

Hanan is also a community organizer and has focused her efforts on youth empowerment through local youth groups, regional camps and conferences, as well as serving as an educator and mental health consultant for varying institutions. Hanan is currently a Sunday School teacher for middle and high school students in Austin.
